Trust for Western Christian Families

Dear Western Christian Families,

I remember taking my daughter Grace to the doctor’s office to get a shot when she was just a little one who couldn’t even walk yet.  I sat her down and held on to her as the doctor came in with a big needle to poke into her little arm.  She smiled looking up at me, and very quickly her smile turned to a frown upon feeling the needle enter her arm and then the frown turned to a look of horror followed by a scream and tears pouring forth.  She looked up at me and couldn’t speak, but I know what she was thinking, “Daddy!!  Stop this man from hurting me!!”  Oh, how I cried and my heart felt broken as I said to her, “My sweet girl, I have to let this man hurt you so you won’t get sick now and in the future!”  Oh, how I wanted her to understand me, but I knew she couldn’t yet.  She just had to TRUST that I loved her and would never allow a needless tear in her life.  I would lay down my life for Grace, but I had to allow her to experience the pain of that shot for her ultimate good.

So the point of the story is found in something Jesus asks us in Matthew 7:11, “If you (humans), being evil (sinful natures), know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him?” If I asked any of you parents out there if you would be willing to lay down your life for your son or daughter, I would wage everything I have to bet that every one of you would raise your hands in a resounding YES to that question.  So the question we are all asking now is CAN GOD BE TRUSTED?  Let me follow that question by another one, namely, is there any other worldview that exists where God actually offers Himself as a sacrifice for the sins of those who would follow Him?  I have studied many worldviews and have yet to find one.  The only other alternative then is to put your trust in yourself, in other words, make yourself into your own God.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t control a little microscopic virus let alone the sun, moon and stars being kept in order.

Colossians 1:16, 17 says, “For by Christ all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.  All things were created through Him and for Him.  And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.”  That word “consist” actually means to be held together.   This verse strongly asserts that we are actually physically held together by Christ.  Did you know that the material in our physical bodies that holds us together and keeps us from coming apart is called Lanolin.  Do you know when they looked at lanolin under the microscope, it is in the shape of a cross!!  Completely true and again I don’t think that is by accident!  So we rely on Christ not only for every breath that we take but actually for our entire ability just to exist.  As Acts 17:28 says, “In Him and by Him and through Him we have our being.”

Jesus said in John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”  We all would lay down our lives for your kiddos—no questions asked!  “But God demonstrates His love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” Romans 5:8.  Though we were enemies of the cross and spit upon Him and reviled Him, He cried out on our behalf, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do!”  This is a God I can TRUST!!  In Him alone is my hope and my song for He alone has loved me with an everlasting love that will never fade but will last for all eternity!!  Let’s lead our families into putting our TRUST in Him, for He alone is God and good and would never allow a needless tear in our lives!
