The winter sports season have begun with a bang. All four sports had opened with tournaments and the games, along with the action, were plentiful. We beat big schools, small schools, public schools, private schools, and even a certain rival school; IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!!! Without further ado here is how it went:

BOYS BASKETBALL

Beat Ontario Christian in WEBB Tourney Championship Game

Varsity: Off to a blazing start, the boys’ varsity basketball team began its first week of the season with a 4-0 record. Led by senior James Durauku’s 19 points, the Lancers posted a season opening win at home against Bosco Tech, 64-48. Next up, they defeated Ribet Academy in the first round of the Webb Tournament, 65-52, behind a 26 point effort by junior Sammy Santillano. In the second round of the tournament, a tough Webb team succumbed to the Lancer’s stifling defense, and the 51-34 victory put WCHS into the championship game of this tournament for the first time since 1990. In that game, sophomore post player Andrew Hyde hit 3 three pointers and tallied 11 points. Playing for the championship, the Lancers answered every challenge from Ontario Christian in a hard-fought, exciting game. Santillano drained 32 points, including 8 three pointers, as Western defeated the league rival Knights 70-62, to bring home the title. Santillano was named the tournament MVP, and Durauku averaged over 10 ppg for the tourney. Durauku and sophomore Mark McMahon led the rebounding corps, each averaging 7.5 per game. Coach Jeff Wheeler credits an outstanding overall team effort and commitment for the great start.

Junior Varsity: The lancers dropped their home opener to Don Bosco Tech despite valiant efforts by Sophomores Daniel Chakbazof, Zack Carpenter, Michael Broad. They are currently 0-1 on the season.

CHEER

Lancers Win the Sharpe Invite Competition

This past Saturday our cheerleaders had their first competition of the year. Their nerves where high, but the girls were excited to be back out on the blue mat. The girls competed in the large varsity division, with 5 other schools that were all public. The girls went out there and showed that the Western Christian Cheer Spirit was still alive. With a great performance satisfaction was achieved just by a job well done. Yet, not only did the girls win the Large Varsity division taking first, but they won the best overall score of the whole competition, all divisions included, and the Grand Masters Championsip. To win this the girls had to not only achieve the highest score, but had to do well in all the other events held at the competition. This included a stunt off, tumble off, and a jump off. Points were also given for the crowd that came to support the girls, and the dad that got involved in the dads dance. The trophy is taller than most of the girls and they were so excited to receive this piece of hardware. This is a great start to the new competition year, and we are looking forward to what the rest of the year has for us.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The ladies opened the very tough Wilson Tourney with a big victory over big public school La Mirada. This was a great win for the ladies whom quickly became a victim of their own success. By beating La Mirada that put them in the winners bracket which pitted them against big school power houses. The Lancers dropped three in a row to La Salle, Walnut and Diamond Bar. The Lancers finished the week 1-3 and were led by Senior Lauren Gonzales’ 18.2 ppg and Junior Sarah Mutch’s 38 rebounds.

NOTE: reporter needed for this sport

BOYS SOCCER

The Boys Varsity Soccer team started off their season with a 4-2 victory over St. Michael’s of Silverado. On Friday they began the WC Tournament and lost the first round game 2-0 to eventual Tourney Champion Diamond Ranch. The boys bounced quickly under new head coach Mychal Armstrong with a big win over local big school San Dimas H.S. and another victory over big school Yucca Valley as they propelled themselves into the semi finals. Once there to they dropped a match 5-0 to Southlands before finishing 4th out of 16 schools (13 public big schools) with a last round loss to Colony. They go into week two with a 3-3 record.

NOTE: reporter needed for this sport

GIRLS SOCCER

The Lancer ladies opened up the season going 2-1 on in the WC Tourney under new head coach Sergio Trujillo. They beat St. Lucy’s B team 2-1 in the first round and took a forfeit in the second round. They ladies dropped game three as they head into week two.

NOTE: report needed for this sport

SAC. He had his sites set on qualifying for state, but the Junior runner just fell short. He has already begun training despite next season being 9 months away as Meister is determined to make it to STATE in 09.

Finally, the Lady Lancers were honored by the League with the Christian League Sportsmanship Award. This award is given to the team which personifies Christian values throughout the season as voted by the league coaches. Congratulations to our ladies.

Varsity Football ended the season at 5-5 for their first .500 or better season in 6 years. In the final game they put up 33 points in a losing effort to Ontario Christian. Quarterback Alex Beaton found another favorite target in Sophomore wide out Christian Solis. Solis complimented other wide outs Reed Covington, Jorge Perez, and Robert Wiley very well. According to CIF the Lancers finished one slot out of the playoff picture. CIF phoned early on Saturday morning after our last game asking WC for an at large bid, but the stars would not align for the Lancers in 08. We do have a very young team that bodes well for next season. The Lancers did secure a number of All-League spots, but those cannot yet be released until after the banquet.

The Junior Varsity really finished the season strong after opening the season 0-4. They managed to convincingly win 4 of their last six contests for a 4-6 finish.
