Superintendent’s Update | Things You Might Not Know

Posted on May 16th, 2013

Dear Western Christian Families,

As we attend the final events of the year and send off our high school graduates to the country’s finest universities, we have a tremendous opportunity to give Glory to God.  Only for Him is Western Christian seeking to become one of the world’s top schools and only through Him have our students accomplished amazing things.  God is continually blessing us and I wanted to recap some of the progress that He has allowed WCS to make this year.

21st Century Classroom Initiative

The 21st Century Classroom Initiative began a few years ago with funds raised for iPad labs at each of our campuses.  I want to thank those of you who have supported and given to this cause over the recent years.  As funds have continued to come in, amazing tools have been added for our students. Here are some of the things that were put in place this school year.

  • New iMac computers were purchased for our high school computer lab.  This has allowed us to modernize and expand the curriculum of our technology and media courses in order to engage, inspire, and equip our students to become the pioneers of the future.  The computers that were replaced were relocated to the library creating a second lab for our high school.
  • Interactive whiteboards were installed K-2 just before the start of this school year effectively completing our goal to equip each classroom K-8 with this tremendous instructional technology.  Teachers have a new level of innovation and freedom in the classroom and students are engaged and enlivened like never before.
  • The high school acquired new science data collection equipment. This technology will provide new ways for students to collect, analyze, and share data from their experiments. With these tools in the hands of our students, we are developing the next generation of Christian doctors, scientists, and engineers.

Security Cameras

If you’ve been on the Claremont campus lately, you may have noticed the newly installed security cameras.  Recently, the local Police Department held a special meeting to discuss the increase in parking lot break-ins throughout the city of Claremont.  The safety of our students is a top priority.  As such, WCS has been raising money for safety and security over the last few years via the Spell-A-Thon fundraiser. This year’s Spell-A-Thon brought in $17,668.64 of which a portion was used for the installation of these new cameras.  This surveillance system will not only serve as a theft deterrent but will also provide us with valuable information about the happenings on our campus 24 hours a day.

Multi-Purpose Building

Plans for our multi-purpose gymnasium building and athletic fields at the Claremont campus continue to move forward. We are currently working with our neighbors and the city of Claremont to prepare our project for final submission and approval. Please continue to pray with us as we hope to break ground on the project in the coming year.

Legacy Dinner Auction

Our God is amazing! The 2013 Legacy Dinner Auction brought in nearly $84,000. I can’t thank you enough for the love that you have shown in helping provide financial assistance to students in need. I know that the Lord will accomplish unfathomable things through your family and those who you have helped come to Western Christian.

God bless you all,

Posted on April 9th, 2013

The Legacy Dinner Auction is next Saturday, April 20th, from 5:30-8:30pm.
All the questions you didn’t know you had can be answered below. Scan the bold :) .

Can I still RSVP?

Yes. You can absolutely still RSVP. This event becomes more fun with every person and you don’t want to miss out. You can either mail or bring in your completed response card or you can RSVP online at www.westernchristian.org/legacy . Technically, the cutoff for RSVPs is tomorrow, but if you can get in your RSVP by the end of the week you’ll be good to go. Please feel free to call Kathy Scheenstra at 909-291-4717 or email auction@westernchristian.org if you have any questions.

Gosh that sounds like a lot of work. Can’t I just go to the office and buy my tickets?

You bet you can. You can purchase tickets from the main offices of each campus for $20 a ticket.

So there will be tickets? Yes. How do I get them?

If you have sent in your RSVP card and paid, your tickets should arrive in the mail shortly. We tried to make things as easy as possible this year. When you arrive at the event, simply present your tickets and you will receive a bid number/program. No more forms to fill out!

I RSVP’d online but haven’t paid yet. How do I get my tickets?

For online RSVPs you can send in a check or pay online at www.westernchristian.org/tickets. If you pay by this week, you will get your tickets in the mail. If for whatever reason you don’t please check in at the WILL CALL line. If you are unable to pay by the end of this week, you can pay at the WILL CALL check-in line at the event.

What’s the agenda for the night?

  • Silent Auctions & Hors d’ oeuvres
    • 5:30 Check In Opens
    • 6:30 Lancer Auction Closes (Outside)
    • 6:45 Hope Auction Closes (Outside)
    • 7:00 Legacy Auction Closes (Inside)

    • 7:30 Live Auction
    • 8:30 Check Out Opens

What is the attire for the night?

Business Casual. Our Silent Auction will begin outside, so bring a coat just in case :) .

Does the school still need items for the auction?

Yes please! Can’t hurt. Donations for the auction are always welcome. The more auction items, the more fun, and the more money raised for students. Please email Kathy Scheenstra at auction@westernchristian.org to coordinate your donation.

What can be expected in the auction?

Our evening will include a silent auction, raffle prizes, and a live auction. The auctions and raffles feature generous items or services donated from our community. Highlights in the auction include class and team created baskets, concert and sport tickets and memorabilia, front row seating at graduations and special events, reserved campus parking , vacations, various luxury items, and other items and services you won’t want to miss out on. One of the highlights of this year’s raffle will be an iPad mini. Students and parents can now begin purchasing $10 raffle tickets in the main office of each campus.

What are we raising money for?

Proceeds from the Legacy Diner Auction will be used towards tuition assistance, creating opportunity for students to experience meaningful, transformational learning. Your support at this event will allow our youth to experience the hope and future they have in Jesus Christ. There is nothing more meaningful than an education that connects students with their God-given purpose. Graduates leave WCS with hope, a quality education, and an informed faith in the Word of God. The bottom line is: The world needs more Western Christian Graduates.

What’s for dinner?

The evening will begin outside with Hors d’ oeuvres served during the silent auction. Following the close of our silent auctions, dinner will be served inside and include Penne Pomodoro, Lasagna Di Carne, served with freshly backed garlic bread and Caesar Salad. Dinner will be served inside. No meal would be complete without incredible amounts of junk food. Please enjoy the candy bar available throughout the evening.

Is there assigned seating?

There is not assigned seating for this event. When we begin the dinner portion of the night you will be free to sit wherever you can find an available seat. There are certain tables that will be reserved for our table hosts and their guests. These tables will have signs to identify their hosts. If you’d like to avoid the hassle of finding a seat, you can save your seat early or take advantage of our table host opportunity.

I am hosting a table. Are there any special instructions for my guests?

If you are hosting a table, please inform your guests to register for a bid number at the WILL-CALL line.

Hey, I want to host a table too! How do I do that?

Those who wish to pledge a thousand dollars or more to Western Christian are offered the opportunity to host a table of up to ten guests. Please email Kathy Scheenstra at auction@westernchristian.org if you are interested in this opportunity.

Where do I park?

Please see the attached map which will show you parking, childcare drop off, and event locations.

Can my children attend with me?

I think your children would get really bored : ). This event is intended for adults. Our free child care will provide a much more fun venue for your children.

FREE CHILD CARE

How do I sign up for child care?

If you would like to take advantage of child care for the night, please fill out the section for childcare on your RSVP card.

Who is doing child care?

Child care will be supervised by our own Ms. Susan Moreno and two other daycare personnel along with two preschool teachers who will watch over the little ones. We have also handpicked student volunteers who will make sure all the kids have a blast.

Where will child care be taking place?

Child care will take place in the Upland preschool just off of the main parking lot of our Upland campus. If it begins to get crowded, we will use some of our high school classrooms for the older kids.

Will there be a check in/out procedure for child care?

Of course. We are going to keep these kids as safe as possible. Please check your children into child care by the Upland preschool after you park your car. You will be able to check them out from the same location.

How will the age groups be broken up?

With allowances for family flexibility, we will have four groups – Preschool, K-2, 3-5, and Middle School.

Will my child be fed?

Only if they eat pizza. So, yes. There will be dinner and snacks provided.

What will they be doing?

There will be every opportunity for you children to have fun this night. We will be coordinating games indoors and outdoors and there will be plenty of activities for your children to take advantage of.

Can my child bring anything with them?

Kids are welcome to bring any appropriate form of entertainment they wish including DSs or iPods. Please keep in mind that the school cannot be held responsible for any lost or damaged items, so please use discretion with what you send with your child.

Message from the Superintendent

December 3, 2012

Dear Western Christian Families,

I would like to thank you for being a part of the great team that the Lord has brought together to serve here at Western Christian. I have been consistently blessed by the kindheartedness of the people in our school community. The students are filled with the joy of learning, teachers have a passion for instruction and sharing Christ, and parents have made the sacrifices and shown the commitment to support a vibrant and growing school community.

As we approach the end of 2012, I would like to share two opportunities for you to give. Your contributions in these two areas will not only bless our staff but will also enhance your child’s learning environment.

The first opportunity to give will help Western Christian Schools to continue improving our academic and extra-curricular programs, which will enhance the learning environment of our schools.  It was a blessing to our school community when the Sider Athletic Field project was completed on our High School Campus.  The next exciting project will be the construction of a gymnasium and multipurpose building and athletic field at our Claremont Campus. We are currently in the planning stages of these campus enhancements. Your donation towards these projects will help WCS to move forward with the construction of these high quality facilities that will serve you, your children, and the Lord for years to come. Donations for this project should be marked “construction project” and must be received before December 31st.  You may give by mail, to your campus office, or online at www.westernchristian.org/giving

The second of these opportunities is to bless the staff by presenting them with a financial gift given by the friends and families of our schools.  Through these gifts, parents and students are able to thank our dedicated staff for the love, devotion, and great instruction that takes place on our campuses.  If you would like to make a donation toward blessing our staff, please submit your gift marked “staff blessing” by December 15th.  You may give by mail, to your campus office, or online at www.westernchristian.org/giving

It is our goal to equip students for lives of purpose that they may experience fulfillment in Christ and draw others to Him.  The Lord has accomplished great things through this ministry, and the generous gifts of parents and supporters, just like you, have enabled this ministry to thrive for more than 90 years.

Thank you again for your consideration of these requests, and the love and support you have already given.

God bless you all,

Blair A Bryant

2012 Grandparents Day at Western Christian Schools

Posted on November 29th, 2012

Grandparents are one of God’s great blessings to families.  Grandparents Day is a long standing tradition of honoring these valuable individuals. Western Christian Schools PK-8 campus held Grandparents Day on Nov. 2nd and the high school’s Grandparents Day took place on Nov. 29th.

K-8 grandparents were treated to breakfast  followed by performances from each grade (Pre-K through 8).  The students took turns singing songs or sharing verses and stories.  The day culminated in the classrooms where the students were able to interact with their grandparents via tours, conversations, laughing, working on crafts together, and learning more about each other.

At the high school, Grandparents Day began with a time of worship and praise followed by a special presentation by Dr. Paul Kienel, a former WCHS grandparent and co-founder of ACSI.  Afterwards, Grandparents enjoyed lunch with their grandchildren as all engaged in the joy of Western fellowship.
