Spiritual Emphasis Week Schedule:

The Athletic Booster Committee is hosting a Bunco Tournament to raise funds for our Athletic program.  If you love Bunco and would like to support our teams, please join us for a night of fun and a chance to win prizes. Winners have a chance to win:

• Most Buncos will receive $100 or 5% of the ticket sales in scrip of their choice.
• Most Wins will receive $75 or 3% of the ticket sales in scrip of their choice.
• Most Losses will receive $50 or 2% of the ticket sales in scrip of their choice.
• Lancer Traveler will receive $20 in scrip of their choice.

If there is a tie for any of these categories, there will be a roll-off to determine the winner. Please contact your liaison or Renee Curtis at jjrdd@aol.com or Lori VanAmberg at lori.vanamberg@verizon.net to reserve your seat or if you have questions.

What is Bunco?

Bunco is a game of dice, a handful of luck and a fun group of people.

1. Guests are divided into groups of four.  One table is assigned the head table or winner’s lounge.  The first four people who arrive will be seated at the head table.  Everyone else can sit at any of the other tables.  Each table will have three dice, a scorecard, a pencil for each player and a score sheet for the table’s scorekeeper.  Someone at the head table rings the bell to start the game.
2. Each table plays as follows:
3. One person will roll the dice. The goal is to roll 1’s. If any of the dice come up as a “1”, then keep rolling. The two teammates will record any 1’s rolled as points on their score sheet.
4. When no 1’s are rolled, give the dice to the next player.
5. If a person rolls three 1’s in one roll, they yell “Bunco!” and get to wear the boa (they wear the boa until someone else gets a three-of-a-kind of the number they are trying to roll). The two teammates will record 21 points on their score sheet!
6. If a person rolls three of a kind of a number other than 1, it is a “mini-bunco”, which gives 5 points to the team. This “mini-bunco” doesn’t give you the boa though. You only get to wear that if you have 3 of a kind of the number you are trying to roll.
7. Play continues until a team at the head table earns 21 points. At this point, they yell “Bunco” and ring the bell to end the round.
8. If you and your teammate won that round, write a “W” on your score sheet. If you lost, write an “L” across that round on your score sheet.
9. After the first round, the two winners of the Head table will stay at that table.
10. The two winners from the other tables will move to the next table up the line toward the winner’s lounge.
11. Losing teams will stay at their tables, except for the losing team of the head table. They’ll move to the loser’s lounge.
12. Whether you stay at your table or move, most players will be in a new seat. You must switch partners after a win or loss. You may not be on the same team with someone two rounds in a row, however, later in the game you can be on the same team again. So teams remaining at a table should shuffle around so that they are not on the same team for the next round.
13. On the second round, try to roll 2’s instead of 1’s. Continue each new round by trying to roll 3’s, 4’s, etc. After you have done six rounds, which are as high as the dice will go, you have completed one game. Wasn’t that fun? We are playing 3 games.

In just a matter of weeks, we will come together for an evening unlike any other here at Western Christian.  This year’s auction promises to be very exciting, with food, raffles, silent auctions and the live auction.  It is always a great night of fun and fellowship.

We are pleased to announce that the funds raised through the auction will be going towards new computers, software upgrades and finishing the installation of smart boards on the Claremont campus.  All proceeds raised through the high school will be going directly towards phase one of the football field.

You can help the auction be a success by donating an item or service to be sold. Previous donations have included rental & time share vacation homes, tickets to sporting events, airline tickets or miles, sports memorabilia, tickets to the theater, art work or collectibles.  Perhaps you are in the service industry and could donate dental work, landscaping, flooring, air conditioning or automobile services or salon or spa services.

The Auction will take place on Saturday, May 15th, on the Claremont campus.  This is a wonderful time where we can come together and show our children that we can make a difference!  We look forward to seeing you there!

COW CHIP PLOP Rules and Regulations

1. Cow Chip Plop field will be a 50 x 40 yard field located at Western Christian High School.
2. Each square yard represents a “land deed parcel” (total of 2000), which corresponds to each numbered deed (0001 to 2000)
3. Each “land deed parcel” (deed) requires a $5.00 donation payable at time of deed purchase.
4. Students and adults can sell tickets. In addition to presales, deeds may be purchased, if available, the day of event at the Cow Chip table up until 11:45 a.m.
5. All parcels are numbered at random prior to starting. A chart will display the parcels during the Cow Chip Plop Game.
6. At 12 noon on April 17, 2010, three cows will be released onto the Lancers 50 x 40 yard football field.
7. The first three “plops” are measured and recorded.
8. Once each parcel has been located on the corresponding numbered chart, the winnings are paid as follows based on selling all 2000 land deed parcels (deeds):

• The first “plop” wins $200.00 or 2% of the total purchased deed parcels
• The second “plop” wins $300.00 or 3% of the total purchased deed parcels
• The third “plop” wins $500.00 or 5% of the total purchased deed parcels

*        If all deeds are not sold, the winning prizes will be equivalent to ten percent of the total amount purchased under State of California non-profit rules.

1. If the “cow chip” lands on bordering parcels (on the line), the prize money will be divided equally among the owners of all affected parcels regardless of the volume on each parcel.
2. If the “cow chip” lands on an unsold lot, the measurement will move one lot north.  If that lot is also unsold the measurement will move clockwise around the originally plopped upon lot until a winner is declared.
3. If a cow does not “plop” after a designated amount of time, the winning parcel will be determined by where the cow’s right rear hoof has landed at the designated time called.
4. Winners do not need to be present to win.  Winners will be notified by phone and/or email.  Winners will be posted on the WCHS website as of Tuesday, April 21th.   Winners must provide proof of deed ownership and claim their prize by July 25, 2010.  Any unclaimed prizes after July 25, 2010 will be considered a donation to the Western Christian High School Athletic Booster Committee.

It is baseball season again and the tradition that you have established is still running strong.  In 2009 the Fighting Lancers went 17-9 and 10-2 in league winning our third Championship in four years.  Senior Robert Wiley was selected League Most Valuable Player joining the ranks of Mark Reynoso (Class of 2008) and Dustin Richmond (Class of 2006).  Junior CJ Beatty was selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Year, Western Christian’s first.

Since the return of Head Coach Mark Gabbard in 2006 the Lancers have compiled an overall record of 55-45 and a league record of 33-15.  In the process the team has produced three league titles, three league MVPs, and six All-CIF players while being ranked in the top 10 twice.

Alumni Virgil Chavirra (Class of 2006) is a starting second baseman and a leading hitter for the #17 ranked Azusa Pacific University Cougars.  Alumni Mark Reynoso (Class of 2008) is currently a player for NCAA Division I Coppin State.  The tradition at Western Christian has been established an carried on by you.

For this reason we are putting together the Fourth Annual Western Christian High School Alumni baseball game on April 17, 2010 at 9:00A.  The game will be played at Memorial Park South Field next to San Antonio Hospital in the city of Upland.  It is our goal to have as many of our alumni come and participate and pass on history to our current student-athletes.  Their will be t-shirts, pre-game batting practice, a seven inning game, and a lunch served back at our new campus.  See the attached flyer for additional information.

The Lancer Baseball Program thanks you for your commitment to Western Christian and your presence at this event will be greatly valued.  If you wish to participate in this event it will be $10.  We look forward to continuing this new tradition as it begins with you and hopefully never ends.  We cannot wait to hear from you.

I just got off the phone with Castle Park and have reserved Saturday, May 8th for our new (and hopefully final) date for Sadies.

Please keep that date clear on all calendars – it is currently clear. Thanks for being understanding, patient and humorous with all of this.

Sadies will take place February 6th February 20th March 6th May 8th from 6:00pm to 10:00pm at Castle Park in Riverside.  Our theme this year is “Sadies Flip-Flop: Opposites Attract”.

Opposite-themed dress ideas: Ketchup & mustard, jock & nerd, preppy & goth, Republican & Democrat. (Please note: Modest dress that is within Western’s guidelines is required)

Tickets are on sale now and will only be available until Thursday, February 4th (or until we run out—whichever comes first) .  Please see Mrs. Kennedy in the High School East office during break or immediately after school for tickets and a contract.  Tickets are $25 each and include food & drinks, rides and miniature golf.

I am so honored to be Western Christian’s Cheer coach for so many years, and to be recognized by FCC as “2010 Coach of the Year”. God has been able to use my passion for cheerleading and young girls to do amazing things and I give the entire honor to Him. To wake up every morning and know that I have the opportunity to make a difference in our youths lives is a gift to me. People search their entire life to find the thing they love to do and are good at and I am blessed to have found it at such a young age. I want to thank God for His diligence in teaching me and growing me every day, Western Christian for allowing me to do what I love to do, my girls for being the amazing people they are, and my family for standing by my side all these years and being my back bone.

* It is rare to find a leader that demonstrates a healthy balance of all of these leadership attributes.  I am here to provide testimony that Coach Amie is one of those rare leaders, and she has touched individuals, families, and communities through her love and leadership.

When I use the word champions, I am not taking about just cheer championships, but rather champions for Christ and for life.  She has taught the girls the concept of being part of something bigger themselves, and that their actions are not only reflective of them, but on their family, their team, and the ministry known as Western Christian High School cheer program.

*Amie is a great coach and these girls do well in competition but that’s not why I’m writing this letter.  Amie makes it a priority to meet the needs of each girl on this team emotionally and spiritually, she is more that a coach.  She supports these girls through the challenges of adolescence and sometimes through life situations beyond their year.

The present arena of High School is difficult and stressful but with good mentors like Amie Roggemann it remains fun and age appropriate.  My daughter is fortunate to be part of the cheer program at Western Christian.

The Western Christian community is one of the most responsive groups around. It is because we all share the value of modeling to our children acts of kindness and stewardship. The Claremont campus families recently donated 650 pairs of shoes in one week.  We have been in on-going communication with our friends at Granite Creek Community Church in Claremont. The Pastor and his wife, Larry and Janice Kapchinsky, are amazing servants and have a non-profit humanitarian aid organization, (Kid Care) which serves to help many children locally and around the world. They have been working extremely hard to help the needs in Haiti at this time. Things are still desperate in Haiti and they need our continued help.  They have a team going to Haiti within the next week that will be on the ground and able to see more specific needs.

Boys Basketball has a big game tomorrow at home vs. Loma Linda at 7:30P. A win will put them in a three way tie for first place with Aquinas and Loma Linda with one game to play on Thursday; also at home. The boys are currently 17-8 and 4-2 in league and ranked #11 in CIF Division 5AA.

JV Boys Basketball have won 5 out of their last 6 to improve to 9-10 and 4-2 in league. They too are playing for a JV league title this week.

Girls Soccer is in the driver’s seat to secure the 3rd playoff spot in our league. The ladies are 5-13-2 overall and 3-2-2 in league. A win tomorrow at home vs. Loma Linda at 3:15P and Cabrillo Park could propel them into the playoffs.

Girls Varsity Basketball is looking to finish strong with games at home tomorrow at 6:00P vs. Loma Linda and again at home on Thursday vs. Arrowhead Christian. The ladies are 5-15 and 2-6 in league.

This is a big week and we look forward seeing you all out there.

Dear Parents,
I trust that you have all received your registration packets and begun to complete them. As you can see by the process, virtually all the forms are the same as before. In fact, we have reduced the paperwork for 8th graders going into our high school in order to make the process simpler.

The only major change we made is in our financial agreement, regarding withdrawal from the school , where we have implemented a 30-day communication notice before the semester’s end, in order to enhance the dialogue between the home and school.

At Western Christian Schools, partnering with our parents is important to us and we endeavor to improve our communication between home and school in every way possible. That’s why I encourage every parent that has not taken the opportunity to participate in our RenWeb Connect to sign up today! This way you can go online to view your child’s grades, any missing assignments , homework, even tardy and absent reports on a daily basis. Western has invested almost $60,000 on this program to help make communication between teachers, students and parents our number one priority. It’s our goal to have every family use RenWeb because it has proven to be an effective communication tool between our teachers and administration with students and families.

To obtain your parent password contact the school office. We have a large number of students who are checking their RenWeb account on a regular basis, which has helped keep their grades much higher this year, and we congratulate their efforts in being responsible.
