Considering the omnipresence of delays in any sort of construction, Western Christian must be commended for the ambitious schedule regarding its new football stadium.
After beginning to build the first on-campus facility in the school’s 90-year history on Aug. 24, Western Christian is planning to open its new stadium Oct. 15 for its homecoming game against Pasadena Maranatha. So, in less than two months, the Lancers will have constructed their new stadium.
“Some pretty crazy stuff has gone on in the last month,” Western Christian athletic director Nick Karavedas said. “We got approval from the city in mid-August and we said, `We have to open it this year.’ This is just the first phase but we wanted to get it ready for play and what better time to open it than homecoming?”
Having moved last year from its original campus in West Covina to the former campus of Upland Christian, the smaller eight-man football field of Upland Christian – which was 80 yards by 40 yards – was enlarged to suit Western Christian’s 11-man team. Several portable buildings were removed to make room for phase one but additional bleachers and a snack bar will be added at a later date to complete the second phase of construction.
“We had to move some buildings, bring in some additional lighting and a scoreboard and we made the field longer and wider,” Karavedas said. “We basically retro-fitted the old eight-man field. And the good thing is this will benefit the football team but the boys and girls soccer teams will be able to play here, too.”
Construction will begin September 7th on the Western Christian High School Athletic Complex commemorating Western Christian Schools 90th year in Christian education.

Our school year is fast coming to its close , as we are all busy with year-end projects, making sure we end the year strong.. It has, in fact, been a strong year for us here at Western where in addition to the learning and growth taking place daily, we have had some great milestones marking this our 90th year in Christian education. Our transition this first year in the new high school facility and new Upland preschool has been phenomenal, where we have observed the marked difference the new environment has made in student learning and achievement. Especially in the area of spiritual growth, we have seen tremendous strides made among our student body , K-12, particularly now that high school chapels and worship concerts are held in our formal sanctuary in Upland.
Our K-8th grades, this year we are grateful to have begun our Gifted and Talented program, where participants are challenged to excel further in creativity and learning . Our athletics reached new heights this year, with many awards received in middle school and high school (for more details look for upcoming annual Showcase of Achievement brochure coming out this Summer) Our students also grew in discipleship as they served in the local community, helped in community service and missions projects worldwide, as well as in service clubs , extra curriculars and involvement in our campus events.
Our Preschool in Claremont added a new Toddler program for children 18-months and older and our Upland Preschool enhanced its program as well as its playground facilities offering more to our families. Faculty Committees have been formed this year to make improvements across all areas of our academic curriculum as well as fine arts and extra curricular programs.
Legacy Funds are still coming in, thanks to all participants, totaling $182,548 in donations and pledges to date. As planned for this year, a portion of these funds were dedicated to establish a Teacher Endowment Fund, a first for Western. (A detailed report of the Legacy Fund is presented in the pages to follow.)
We give God the glory for His faithfulness to Western Christian and His working through us to accomplish all these over the last year.
We still have over a month remaining in the school year with plenty more to learn in the classrooms and to accomplish for our school. I invite you to join us for the Joint Mixer on May 6 (no alcohol but great food) we are hosting for the Upland and Claremont Chambers at our high school and the Auction on May 15, at the Claremont campus, for an enjoyable evening as a family. Let me close by reminding you to sign up for Summer School now. Studies have shown the benefits of a summer program to the overall performance of students, and ,to that end, we have designed a full academic and enrichment program to be offered for our students.
Thanks again for your support and partnership , making a tremendous impact on the success of this school and its ministry.
Next Thursday and Friday, May 13th & 14th Coldstone Creamery (Euclid & Foothill in the Vons shopping center) will be hosting a fundraiser for Western Christian High School from 3:00PM to 11:00PM on both days to benefit our new athletic field. They will be donating back to Western 15% of the total sales of anyone who makes a purchase at their store and brings in our (very important) fundraiser flyer during these two days between 3:00PM and 11:00PM. Flyers are available in the HSE Office, Burton West Office. You may also download a printable flyer here.
Because we like a little competition around here, at the bottom of the flyer you will see a list of WCHS sports, groups and clubs. When you go to Coldstone on the 13th and 14th and bring your flyer, you will have the opportunity to check the sport, group or club you are representing. You may only choose one per flyer. The sport, group or club that attracts the most patrons to Coldstone during the fundraiser will get a ice-cream party with a free LOVE-IT size ice cream (with mix-ins of course).
And that’s not all! For those of you who have always wanted to work in an ice-cream store, your dream is about to come true! Coldstone is allowing our employees and coaches to come in and staff the store for those two days (with some help from the ice-cream professionals thankfully). With that in mind, I would invite you to pick a day and time that you could be available to work a shift. If you are involved with a sport/group/club you could even have your participants come out during your shift and invite their families and friends to come as well for fellowship, fun and some laughter (at you for not knowing what you’re doing)! Please let me know by the end of the day Tuesday, May 11th what day and time you would like to work and I will schedule you.
Some extra promotions:
Thursday, May 13th is the Pops Concert at 6:30PM in the Amphitheatre. Before the show stop by Coldstone and pick up a cool treat. After the show, I’m sure a before-bed-treat would sound great!
Friday, May 14th is Powder Puff Football at 3:30PM. After the game, stop on by Coldstone for some cool refreshment!
In just a matter of weeks, we will come together for an evening unlike any other here at Western Christian. This year’s auction promises to be very exciting, with food, raffles, silent auctions and the live auction. It is always a great night of fun and fellowship.
We are pleased to announce that the funds raised through the auction will be going towards new computers, software upgrades and finishing the installation of smart boards on the Claremont campus. All proceeds raised through the high school will be going directly towards phase one of the football field.
You can help the auction be a success by donating an item or service to be sold. Previous donations have included rental & time share vacation homes, tickets to sporting events, airline tickets or miles, sports memorabilia, tickets to the theater, art work or collectibles. Perhaps you are in the service industry and could donate dental work, landscaping, flooring, air conditioning or automobile services or salon or spa services.
The Auction will take place on Saturday, May 15th, on the Claremont campus. This is a wonderful time where we can come together and show our children that we can make a difference! We look forward to seeing you there!
