Christian Professionals’ Fellowship – you are invited!

Posted on May 2nd, 2011

As iron sharpens iron so does a friend sharpen his friend’s character”
—Proverbs 27:17

The Bible Department at Western Christian Schools aims to be a resource to the local professional community by being the catalyst for such fellowship. To that aim, WCS has established the Christian Professionals’ Fellowship (CPF) as a place of gathering for like-spirited professionals to share practical and relevant biblical application of God’s vision for the business world.

This invitation is open to all Christian professionals. Please feel free to invite others who would like to enjoy a morning of worship and fellowship. We look forward to seeing you there.

Our first meeting will be Friday May 20th from 7:00-7:45am. Click here for complete details.

2010 Legacy Update

Posted on December 20th, 2010

Dear Western Families,

In this season of celebration, we are delighted to share with you some highlights from this year’s Annual Legacy Celebration Dinner. We are glad that so many of you joined us for the 90th anniversary celebration of Western Christian Schools’ ministry.

The event, held at the Pomona Valley Mining Company on November 13, 2010, was a memorable occasion. The banquet hall was elegantly decorated, and our student hosts were there to greet all guests.  The program included performances by our own Hill Top Faith and Kids on the Rock choirs as well as presentations by members of our Administration who shared the accomplishments of the recent past and a vision for Western’s future.

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of this year’s Legacy award winners.  Eight exceptional students were honored for their academic achievement, community service, demonstration of leadership, and personal character.  This year’s Legacy Award winners are: Ariel Abdullah and Ryan Place (5th grade), Taylor Kross (Private Satellite Program), Carinna Prince and Gabe Cobb (8th grade), Paige Park (International Student Program) and Mark McMahon and Ana Maria Antonio (12th grade).  These students represent Western Christian’s continued legacy of excellence.

At the close of the evening, Keith Doolittle, a member of Western Christian’s Board of Trustees, emphasized the importance of sacrificial giving to Christian education as a means of making a transformational investment in the lives of current and future students.

To date, this year’s donations to the Legacy Fund total over $70,000.  These gifts will be used to reinforce Western’s four main goals for the 2010-2011 school year: Maintain a Viable Enrollment, Retain Qualified Teachers, Enhance Spiritual Development, and Maximize Our Facilities.  The Legacy Fund has been used over the last year for the purchase of new computers at the high school, office renovations at the Claremont preschool, improving teacher compensation, continuing financial assistance for families, and the purchase of new curriculum and software for students including “Beyond Technology” and “Accelerated Reader.” Western Christian’s Annual Report (click here) is further testimony to the progress we have achieved through the careful stewardship of our resources.

Improvements slated to be completed over the next few years include the construction and modification of permanent buildings for Middle School, the creation of a multi-purpose complex to be used for weekly chapel, cafeteria, and visual arts performances, and the enhancement of our Teacher Endowment Fund.

Western Christian continues to be  grateful to the Lord for His faithfulness in our school community. We have been blessed for 90 years with the support of our families, not only through entrusting the education of their children to our school, but through their assistance in fulfilling the financial needs of this ministry. Western Christian would like to extend a big “Thank You!” to all those who were able to join us for this very special evening, either in person, through sponsorship, or through a financial commitment over the next year.

We are grateful for your partnership!

New Stadium Takes Fast Track to Completion

Considering the omnipresence of delays in any sort of construction, Western Christian must be commended for the ambitious schedule regarding its new football stadium.

After beginning to build the first on-campus facility in the school’s 90-year history on Aug. 24, Western Christian is planning to open its new stadium Oct. 15 for its homecoming game against Pasadena Maranatha. So, in less than two months, the Lancers will have constructed their new stadium.

“Some pretty crazy stuff has gone on in the last month,” Western Christian athletic director Nick Karavedas said. “We got approval from the city in mid-August and we said, `We have to open it this year.’ This is just the first phase but we wanted to get it ready for play and what better time to open it than homecoming?”

Having moved last year from its original campus in West Covina to the former campus of Upland Christian, the smaller eight-man football field of Upland Christian – which was 80 yards by 40 yards – was enlarged to suit Western Christian’s 11-man team. Several portable buildings were removed to make room for phase one but additional bleachers and a snack bar will be added at a later date to complete the second phase of construction.

“We had to move some buildings, bring in some additional lighting and a scoreboard and we made the field longer and wider,” Karavedas said. “We basically retro-fitted the old eight-man field. And the good thing is this will benefit the football team but the boys and girls soccer teams will be able to play here, too.”
