Athletic Boosters Annual Brick Campaign: Still On!

Posted on October 19th, 2010

Dear Lancer Families, Friends, Alumni and Community Members:

Buy a Brick, Build a Legacy

The Western Christian Athletic Booster Committee is sponsoring its First Annual Brick Campaign. Families, friends, alumni and community members are invited to help pave the “Lancer Road to Victory” with the purchase of a personalized, engraved brick that will be permanently set and prominently displayed near the entrance of the Sports Complex. The Sports Complex will be home to our football and soccer teams, and will also serve as a practice field for track and field. In addition, the field will be used by our P.E. Department. The Sports Complex will also be used for special events such as this year’s 90th Celebration and Harvest Festival (preschool – 12th grade) along with our Homecoming on October 15, 2010. Every student at Western Christian will benefit from the Sports Complex. All families, friends, alumni and community members will have the chance to honor their families or students, recognize a graduate, remember a loved one, show support for an organization or advertise their business by purchasing a beautifully engraved brick. AZUSA, Calif. — A trio of Azusa Pacific seniors capped their collegiate soccer careers with NAIA All-American and All-Tournament recognition, led by first-team picks Theresa Broad and Katie Rorabaugh and joined by third-team selection Lauren Lane.

Broad, who became just the second Cougar ever to repeat as Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year, is the first player from Azusa Pacific to merit NAIA All-American first team recognition all 4 years of her career. She led the GSAC in points (35) and goals (16) and wrapped up her brilliant career with 86 goals, just 4 shy of the program’s career scoring record. She scored 14 of her 16 goals during a 12-game stretch through the middle of the season, including a career-high 5-goal outburst in a 6-0 win over Trinity International (Ill.).

Pomona’s Itzen Continues Hot Streak

Talk about hot. Pomona’s Justin Itzen, 27, continues his blistering August and September birdie pace, which is packed with 60s. Itzen was nearly perfect again Monday. He racked up eight birdies – count ‘em – to go with one lone bogey while firing a 7-under- par 65 at Yucaipa Valley Golf Club.

And the round was shot in a pressure-filled 18-hole qualifier for the Nationwide Tour’s upcoming Soboba Classic.

That wasn’t the end, though. Faced with a five-man playoff late Monday afternoon with other “65″ shooters, Itzen sank an 18-foot birdie putt at the 402-yard first hole, thus sealing his berth in the $1 million Classic, which starts Thursday.

“That putt got me in,” Itzen said Tuesday. “The other guys had to come back this morning to finish qualifying.”

The 72-hole event runs through Sunday at the Country Club at Soboba Springs.

Itzen’s stunning play started early in August when he shot a course record 10-under 62 at San Marcos’ Twin Oaks Golf Course in a Golden State Tour event.

In September, he followed with a wonderful 8-under-par 64 for a Golden State victory at Temecula Creek Inn Golf Resort.

And last Monday, at Tierra Del Sol Golf Club in California City, in a professional event called the High Desert Classic, Itzen went deep into the 60s again. He carved out a course-record 62 on the first day, and despite battling brutal winds in the second round Tuesday, shot a 72 to win the 36-holer with a 134.

“I’m gaining confidence,” said Itzen, a six-year pro who played on the Canadian Tour in 2008 and ’09. “I have a new putter, and my putting is really improved. I started to gain confidence after that 62 in August.”

Itzen, who’s 5-9 and 155 pounds, knows he’s in fast Nationwide company close to home, and he said, “I’m up with the big boys here, and I think I’m ready.”

So do we – especially if he keeps going like 60.

A total of seven players from a Yucaipa field of 127 qualified for the Soboba Classic, but aside from Itzen, no locals advanced. Jerry Chen of Rancho Cucamonga shot a 70, and Michael Drake of Fontana a 71.

Kyle Nicolson of Upland and Alfred Labrador of Fontana finished at 75 on Monday and came up short in their Classic qualifying at the East Valley Championship Course in Beaumont.
