This is another reminder that all 9th through 11th grade students will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT test on campus on Wednesday, October 12 at 8:10 a.m. You already paid for the cost for testing through the payment of your student’s fees at the beginning of the school year.

Below, you will find room assignments for students and other general information about the day. If you are picking up your student from one of our bus drop-off points, please make arrangements to arrive at the adjusted pick-up time so that your student is not waiting at that location for an extended period of time.

SCHEDULE:  Wednesday, October 12 from 8:10 to 11:00 AM students will be testing (see the list below for room assignments).  Students will be dismissed at 11:00 AM.  Buses will leave at 11:15 AM.

LOCATION:    Students will report to their 1st period class for testing. However, all students will be testing in the High School East Building.  If your 1st period class is not usually in the HS East Building, please consult the room assignments below to determine what room your 1st period class will be using. Per PSAT/NMSQT testing policy, no food or drink (including water) will be allowed in classrooms.  Please bring two #2 pencils and a calculator.

PSAT Information

The PSAT/NMSQT is mandatory for every WCHS 9th through 11th grade student. The cost for the exam has already been covered through the payment of your students fees. The PSAT/NMSQT is an exam that provides our school community with many practical benefits. It prepares students for the SAT, enters them into competition for national scholarships and awards, and provides both students and teachers with an accurate measurement of progress in the areas of Math, Critical Reading, and Critical Writing. We have made this test mandatory at Western Christian because of these benefits.

In case you have not heard of the PSAT/NMSQT, or in case you would like to refresh your memory about what it is and why students across the nation take it, I have included the following link as a resource for parents: http://www.collegeboard.com/parents/tests/meet-tests/21296.html. This website has a wealth of information about the exam and test-taking in general. If you notice that your student struggles with stress when taking tests, I recommend clicking on the following article, titled, “Handling Test Stress: Practical Tips to Help Your Child.”

Another helpful site explains approaches to preparing for the PSAT/NMSQT. This site provides pertinent information for students about the exam, including practice questions and information about scholarship opportunities.

Attached in this email, you will also notice two helpful brochures and pamphlets that relate to the PSAT. The attached presentation titled PSAT- A Step to the Future is extremely informative. Please examine these attachments and, most importantly, discuss the exam and its importance with your student.

School sees tablets as a tool for learning

UPLAND – For Western Christian Schools’ officials, Apple iPads will be viewed as a tool for learning rather than a distraction during class.

Western’s High School campus in Upland and k-8 campus in Claremont, will each have 30 iPads traveling from classroom to classroom when school starts in September.

“This year we thought what a great idea to raise money for iPad lab, which is basically a portable computer lab, but instead of using standard PC or Mac computers it will be done with the iPad,” said Brandon Doolittle, advancement director at Western Christian Schools.

So far, 50 iPads have been purchased with money raised during a fundraiser in May. Doolittle is raising money for an additional 10.

The ultimate goal will be to have an iPad for every student, Doolittle said.

“This is kind of like our kick start to get teachers used to it, get students used to it and to get parents familiar with where we’re going as a school,” Doolittle said. “If all goes well we could see this implemented at the high school for the 2012-13 school year as a one to one program.”

For students who do not like the idea of dissecting a frog during science class, there’s an App for that.

“Once you have the frog dissected you can pick apart the organs that have been exposed and they get enlarged full screen and you move them in in a 3D space and read about their functions,” Doolittle said.

Teachers are currently researching various ways to implement the use of the iPad and its applications into their 2011-12 curriculum, Doolittle said.

“One of the best things about the iads are that they can provide a tool for teachers to reach student of all different learning styles,” Doolittle said. “You have your visual learners, your auditory learners, and your tactile/kinesthetic learners.”

The iPad labs will also help to compliment the curriculum for both advanced students and those who need help catching up, Doolittle said.

Plus, the iPads have a long battery life and weigh less than a textbook, which pleases Holly Wood, a parent of two students at Western Christian High School.

“As a parent you’re concerned for your children in so many different ways and carrying a backpack loaded with books has proven to be harmful to their spines and their backs,” Wood said.

Wood is also a believer if giving children the latest technology to help them prepare for college.

“If they don’t have an understanding of technology when they graduate from high school they’re going to be lost,” Wood said.

Hank Zhao, Summer Wu and Jessica Yun entered their, “ Does Temperature affect eh Surface Tension of Water?”  They went on to take second place in the Physical Science category.  They were only one or two points behind the first place group.  Nicole Bernardini entered the “What household Products will fix scratched CDs?”  in the Physical Science category taking third place!   Yvonne Lan and Lily Yen entered their project, “Do natural materials purify water?” received a superior rating in the Physical Science category.

Austin Grow, and Brittany Lamon-Paredes entered their project, “Is there more DNA in larger sized living things?”  received a superior rating in the Life Science category.   McKayala and Shelby Kennedy ‘s project, “Does Temperature affect the pH of Orange Juice?”  received and excellent rating in the Life Science category.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are a wonderful opportunity to extend lines of communication between home and school. It keeps you as parents informed about your student’s progress and for developing cooperative strategies that can ultimately benefit your student.

The purpose of the Parent Teacher Conferences is to meet and greet your students teachers. We have allotted 3-5 minutes per conference for you to meet with your student’s teachers and get general information about your students performance.  This is not an appointment initiated due to an issue that needs to be resolved. If you need a longer period of time to meet with a particular teacher, please schedule and appointment at your convenience by calling Mrs. Sleight in the HSE Bldg. Admin Office at 909-920-5858 ext. 253.

Eleven students at Western Christian High School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program^® (AP^®) provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.

At Western Christian High School:

Three students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are Lisa Jan, Heather Kenney, and Yan “Hank” Zhao.

Two students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are Genevie Co and Nathan Keys.

Six students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with scores of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are Melissa Bell, Pablo Fuentes, Haowei Han, Moses Lee, Elizabeth Soh, and Stephanie Yeung.

Through more than 30 different college-level courses and exams, AP provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and stand out in the college admission process. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s leading liberal arts and research institutions. More than 3,800 colleges and universities annually receive AP scores. Most four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or advanced placement for qualifying exam scores. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and have higher college graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.

As many of you know, this year WCHS provided a Learning Resource program under the direction of Julie Weaver. Our desire next year is to expand this program from a part-time to a full-time program. The aim of the program is to provide families with an in-house, economical choice for struggling students that provides continuity and support with current school assignments and expectations. For parents, this program is an alternative, convenient option to other expensive, for-profit, outside tutoring programs that are disconnected from Western Christian High School. We are also looking into the feasibility of offering an in-house, after-school tutoring program for students who experience difficulty in specific subjects but do not necessarily have identified learning needs.

In order to best service our academic community here at Western Christian, we would need to charge an additional fee for this service. In considering the quality and cost of program models available to us, we have determined that a fee of approximately $2, 000 should be charged for one school year of daily, single period service. In order for this program to be self-sustaining, we would need a minimum of 40 students to participate. The after-school tutoring program would also be offered at an additional hourly cost. We would like you to respond to the following survey questions so that we can make a decision that takes into account your needs.

Note: The Learning Resource Program is a voluntary program. No fees would be assessed to any student without the voluntary participation of the student and family. Math Lab is not a part of the Learning Resource Program.

April 16, 2010 was a great day for WCHS as Charlie Pisuraj, Paige Park, Kristen Oon, Krystal Oon and Jason Ji went to the ACSI Regional Science Fair which was held at Biola University in La Mirada.  The ACSI Regional Science Fair is open to all Christian schools in Southern California from Ventura to San Diego.  The High School division has three areas of competition: Physical Science, Life Science and Engineering.  Charlie Pisuraj entered his, “Does Humidity affect the Lift of an Airplane?” experiment in the Physical Science competition.  He received a “superior” ranking and a ribbon.  Kristen and Krystal Oon along with Jason Ji entered their, “Can Fruit Batteries replace two AA Batteries?” in the Engineering competition.  They took first place and each one received a medal.  Paige Park entered the Life Science competition with her, “The Effect of an Eggshell on the Fermentation of Kimchi.”  She received a perfect score from the judges and won a medal for first place.  This is the first time that Western Christian High School won first place in two thirds of the competitions!  Congratulations to our students!

Biola University also had an open house with its Science Department that day as students were able to see and experience all things scientific.  Students had an opportunity to dissect a sheep’s heart and a cow’s eyeball.  Motor skills tests were presented by the Kinesiology Department which included reaction times and gripping strength.  Other demonstrations involved sound, light, electricity and motion.  Biola University has its very own archeological site on campus with which they train their archeology students.  The site was discovered several years ago while construction work was going on the campus.  The area of La Mirada is located on what was a once large lake thousands of years ago.  The largest animal found at this site? A mammoth!  At the end of the day, when the awards were given out, our students beamed with the sense of accomplishment.  All in all, everyone had a wonderful time!
