Swine Flu Information

Posted on April 29th, 2009

Dear WCS Community,

As you may already know from media reports, an outbreak of Swine Flu has caused the U.S.to issue a public health emergency.  Although we do not have any known cases on campus at this time, we are working together as a staff to do everything possible to protect the health of our students and to limit the spread of Swine Flu.

In addition, we need your assistance in making sure all Western families take the precautions suggested by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ensure a safe and healthy school environment.

Photo Gallery: Prom 2009

Posted on April 28th, 2009

The Prom took place on Friday, April 24th 2009 at the Hidden Oaks Retreat Center. The event went very well. The location for the event was unique to WCHS and was a perfect fit for the prom theme, A Secret Garden.

Brad Anderson was crowned king and Rhianna Pierre was crowned queen. Even though the weather was cold, it was a wonderful evening.

The Lord blessed us with beautiful weather and it turned out to be a terrific day for cows to “plop”, people to be “dunked” or “sponged” and lot’s of good food to be eaten. Approximately 1200 cow chip deeds were sold. That’s equal to or more than some of the big public high schools running the same event. This would not have been possible without all of our volunteers.

The top selling team won a pizza party for selling the most Cow Chip deeds.  Congratulations to Baseball.  Listed below are the top 5 selling teams.

Baseball –         182 deeds
Softball –         147 deeds

CLAREMONT – To say Karen Winter has dedicated her life to Christian education would be an understatement.
With more than 35 years in education, a history of building Christian schools from the ground up and a lifetime of being involved with the church, Winter has become a leader in the world of Christian schools.

Winter is the superintendent of Western Christian Schools in Covina and Claremont, where she has been working for the school to acquire certain assets of Upland Christian Schools – an effort that she thinks may have been misunderstood by many parents.

Superintendent’s Update 4/24/09

Posted on April 24th, 2009

Dear Western Christian Families,
Our long term strategic plan and vision is to make Western Christian Schools the best environment for our kids, including the continued improvement and enhancement of our facilities and landscape areas.

Dr. Sider (our honored Alumnus employee of 50+ years) had two recent visits and was thrilled over the positive changes he has seen. Some of the comments that he made to me on his recent visit were, “These improvements around the campus are absolutely amazing. I am so pleased to see the improvements in Sider Hall. It is finally being used to its full capacity. It is so great to see how wonderful everything is looking and how beneficial this is for Western. I am just so pleased. Really you have all done an amazing job!”

We realize how important it is to invest in facility improvements. Not only does it build a strong sense of Western pride, it also enhances our park like setting, which helps enhance our nurturing safe environment. Our two administrative wings are very old and have been in need of upgrades. This has been in the budget for the past couple of years, in order to maintain quality and safety of our facility for our faculty and also our students.

CHINO – It was the kind of game Western Christian High School coach Mark Gebbard wanted to see – the kind of game that Maranatha co-coach Brian DeHaan would rather forget.

Gebbard sent R.J. Pabon out to the mound, his No. 3 pitcher, and the senior shut down the Minutemen for a 9-2 victory in pool play of the 22nd annual Brian Hamilton baseball tournament at Chino High on Thursday afternoon.

“R.J. is really learning to compete on the mound and in his last three starts he is starting to realize his presence on the mound and pitch, not just throw,” Gebbard said. “He had a lot of movement on his fastball and occasionally our young middle infield will give us fits, but they did a good job.”

Pabon scattered three hits in six innings and most of the balls hit were grounders. He hit three batters and gave up one walk, and except for one inning, stayed out of trouble.

“I knew they were a tough team,” Pabon said. “I knew my stuff was good enough. I don’t think they could get to my fastball because of the movement.”
