VOLLEYBALL

Pierini Picks Up 4th Triple Double in Win Against Pomona Catholic

Varsity setter and outside hitter, , picked up her 4th triple double in Western Christian’s win against Pomona Catholic on Thursday, October 23. Western won the game 3 – 2 in an exciting turnaround being down two games going into the third. Sophomore Pierini had 17 kills, 25 assists, and 12 digs to lead the Lady Lancers to victory. Also putting up big numbers in the victory were Juniors Chelsea Cramer with 21 assists and Jessica Arguelles with 10 kills, and Senior Christina Mao with 25 digs.

Tuesday’s game against Ontario Christian ended in a disappointing 3-1 loss against the Lady Knights but the Lady Lancers still populated the stat sheet with impressive numbers indicating that the games were hard fought on both sides no matter what the outcome. Sophomore Taylor Pierini posted her 3rd triple double set of stats with 19 kills, 15 digs, and 11 assists. Junior Chelsea Cramer picked up a double double with 11 digs and 30 assists. Senior Libero Christina Mao had 28 digs, Junior Jessica Arguelles had 11 kills, and Freshman Lyndsey Carruthers had 9 kills and 9 digs.

On the Junior Varsity front, the JV Lady Lancers have been consistent with a terrific win over Ontario Christian in a 2 – 1 victory. Sophomore setter Alexa Cordero had 25 assists, Sophomore hitter Jasmine Lara had 10 kills, and Junior Stephanie Yeung had 12 digs. On Thursday, JV picked up another win against Pomona Catholic in a 2 – 0 decisive match. Sophomore Alexa Cordero had 6 service aces and 8 assists while Junior Vicky Rorex had 5 service aces and 4 kills.

Volleyball resumes again on Tuesday, October 28 at home (Royal Oak gym) with Pack the Gym Night against Arrowhead Christian Academy. Come out and support your Lady Lancers! Wear your X-Factor shirts or any Western Christian shirt to show your spirit! The final four Lady Lancer league games are at home so keep the spirit up by attending all four final games. We’ll see you on the court!!!! Go Lady Lancers!

 

CROSS COUNTRY

Last week, the Western Christian Lancers cross country team competed at their third tri-league meet of the year. The Christian, Big Sky, and Victory Leagues got together at the AB Brown Soccer Complex in Riverside for the 3 mile race. The boy?s varsity race took off at 3:45, and the Lancers performed well, garnering a third place finish in the Christian League. Due to the hot conditions, the times were a little slow, but the team did not let that affect them. Junior Caleb Meister led the way with a 17:34, good enough for 2nd place behind Ontario Christian?s Zach Oliver. The rest of the results are as follows:

On the girls side, senior Kara Quintana showed some toughness and determination by finishing 8th in the girls varsity race with a time of 23:03. It was an off day for Kara, but she will bounce back next Tuesday and move up a few spots. Sophomore Nicole Dinisi finished 14th in the race with a 24:17, a solid performance given the conditions.

On Friday, October 24th, the Lancers competed at the Mt. Sac Invitational, the biggest cross country meet in the country. The weather was hot, and the conditions were less than ideal, but the team competed well in their first trip to the Invite. This course is by far the most difficult course the team will face all year. Caleb Meister led the way again with a 17:46, good enough for 16th in his race. Ben Rinard ran a 19:36 for a 66th place finish. Niko Sapetto (23:24), Nathan Keys, and Tyler Keys all competed here for the first time, and learned a lot from the experience.

Kara Quintana ran a 23:23 and finished 55th in her race. Nicole Dinisi finished the race with a 25:12. The team travels to their 4th tri-league meet on Tuesday, October 28, at Sylvan Park in Redlands and then has the Christian League finals the following Saturday, November 1st.

Lancers no match for Tartans

COVINA - St. Margaret’s High School handily defeated Western Christian 58-7 in a nonleague football game on Saturday. 

Western Christian head coach Rob Castenada said his team “made way too many mistakes and were not prepared to play a team of this caliber.” 

The Lancers, for example, fumbled on its first possession. The Tartans quickly capitalized when quarterback David Mothander scored on a 9-yard run. 

Mothander finished 8 for 11 for 116 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 51 yards and two touchdowns. 

John Maruyama scored on a 7-yard run and finished with 57 yards and two touchdowns. 

St. Margaret’s also blocked a punt and forced a safety. Western Christian scored its only points in the second quarter when Alex Beaton connected with Jorge Perez on a 58-yard scoring pass.

JV LANCERS WIN 3rd IN A ROW WITH BIG WIN OVER UNDEFEATED ST. MARGRET’S

JUNIOR VARSITY: The JV Lancers handily defeated St. Margret’s 27-6 on Friday for their third win in a row. They have improved their record to 3-4 overall. St. Margret’s came into the game with a perfect 6-0 record and had dominated every opponent they have seen. Sophomore Wide Receiver Christian Solis caught three touchdown passes from Freshman quarterback Mike Mendoza. Sophomore Brian McGinnis had a big day on defense recording two sacks. Junior Cody Hillis led the rushing attack and also laid some big hits at the linebacker position.
