"I truly love Western Christian as my life has been touched over the past 30 years as both a student and teacher. Western has been like a family to me as I've loved and been loved by fellow teachers and students alike. The Lord has used Western as a tool to mold, strengthen, encourage and impact my life and the lives of so many others for eternity. I am and forever will be grateful for the gift of Western Christian."

Lancer Family,

Another good week as the ship has been righted and we are sailing in right direction. Every program was successful this week and I am excited to share the news with you. Another special thank you goes out to our article liaisons who have been so diligent in getting me the information. We want to take time to praise God for taking care of Cheerleader Jaclyn Hemphil. She had surgery last Tuesday to remove cancer in her thyroid. The reports are positive and she has already returned to the squad.

Click here for a flyer of the Champions of Tomorrow event the booster club is hosting. This is going to be a great time of music, speakers, and fellowship. It is open to students, parents, family, faculty, staff, community and anyone else who wants to join in. Lisa Waldvogel has worked hard on securing quality entertainment and this is something we want to become a huge annual event. Contact her at locatelisa@roadrunner.com to find out how to purchase your tickets. We look forward to seeing you at the games and Champions of Tomorrow.

VOLLEYBALL

The Lady Lancers Volleyball teams had a busy week from 9/15 – 9/20. The JV had 1 game and the Gladstone Tournament in Azusa while the Varsity had 2 games and the Pasadena Polytechnic Tournament in Pasadena.

Varsity played Calvary Murrieta, the CIF Region 4 powerhouse, putting up strong, consistent numbers. The offensive line of Juniors Chelsea Cramer & Jessica Arguelles, Sophomore Taylor Pierini, and Freshman Lyndsey Carruthers led the WC effort with 10 kills. Our defensive line hustled with 36 digs overall led by Senior Katy Surface with 13. In the end, our ladies put up a good battle but lost to Murrieta in 3. On Wednesday, WC Varsity hosted the LA Lutheran Varsity team at Royal Oak. The Varsity ladies worked swiftly against LA Lutheran winning 3 consecutive games and racking up 10 kills. Freshman Lyndsey Carruthers controlled the service line with 7 of the team’s 18 service aces. Saturday, the Varsity ladies attended the annual Pasadena Polytechnic Tournament at Pasadena Poly. Joining the throng of WC parents in the stands was Principal Robert Yovino. After a strong win against Windward HS, Principal Yovino commented that the girls looked strong on the court and really went after the victory. After 3 tough games, the Lady Lancers came in 3rd in their pool and placed 6th overall in the tournament. The ladies accumulated 49 kills, 15 blocks, 66 digs, 13 services aces, and 36 assists during the tournament. Stat leaders were Freshman Lyndsey Carruthers with 15 kills and 5 services aces, Junior Chelsea Cramer with 18 digs and 16 assists, and Sophomore Taylor Pierini with 4 blocks and 16 assists.

Jr.Varsity had an excitingly close match against Calvary Murrieta but lost against them in a hard fought tie-breaker. However, they had a very strong showing at Gladstone where they ended up taking 4th place overall. Against Calvary Murrieta, Junior Vicky Rorex, Sophomore Jasmine Lara, and Freshmen Vanessa Macias and Hannah Rhinehart led the ladies in kills with 17, while Sophomore Alexa Cordero had 13 assists. The defensive line was held by Juniors Stephanie Yeung and Vicky Rorex, and Freshman Christina Oka with 20 digs.

CROSS COUNTRY

September 20, 2008 Rosemead Invite:

The Western Christian cross country team had another very successful day at the Rosemead Invite. The meet was held on Saturday night at Rosemead High School, and was the team’s second competition of the year.

The course was 2.87 miles, and was very flat and fast. The first race of the day was the freshman boys, and Niko Sapetto and Tyler Keys started the team off well. Sapetto ran a 20:03, about a minute better than his debut race a week earlier. Sapetto has been improving tremendously in practice, and ran down about ten competitors in the last 200 meters of the race. Keys also represented the Lancers well by running a 25:25 in only his second race ever. For the sophomore girls, Nicole Dinisi, a second-year runner, ran a 22:49, which was about 25 seconds better than the week before at the Laguna Hills Invite. Dinisi has been working really hard at practice, and will continue to improve as she becomes more fit in the next month.
Caleb Meister, Ben Rinard, and Nathan Keys competed in the junior boys race. Meister earned a medal in the race by finishing in the top 40. He also managed to set a new personal best in the mile (5:02) in the first mile of his cross country race. His overall time was 16:30, and even though he didn’t better his time from a week ago, he showed that he knows how to mix it up with the leaders by going out hard and pushing his limits. We look for him to do big things at the end of the year. Junior Ben Rinard also had another solid race, running 17:39, about 15 seconds faster than the week before. He also got out well in the race and ran competitively, showing confidence in his abilities. Nathan Keyes ran a smart race, and ran an even pace throughout, finishing with a time of 20:58. He has shown a lot of progress since coming out at the beginning of the school year, and is getting increasingly fit as the weeks go on.
Senior Kara Quintana ran in the last race of the night, the senior girls race. She not only placed 23rd in the race, but also set a personal best and the school record at the same time. Quintana’s time of 20:00 easily beats the Western Christian previous best, and she did it in her first race of the season. We are looking for Kara to make a run at the league title this year, and also go far into the postseason.
The Rosemead Invite was a successful meet overall for the Lancers, with everyone showing improvement, and most of them setting new personal bests. Their next competition is October 4th at the Kenny Staub Invitational in Crescenta Valley.
