Fall Sports Update

Posted September 9th, 2008 in Athletics, High School Comments Off

Here we go Lancer faithful.  Buy your boarding pass and buckle your seat belts.  This will be a non smoking flight to The Sky is the Limit.  Get on board or step aside because we are going to be rolling one way or another.  We have probably the best all around coaching staff in the athletic department than this school has ever had.  We need to get caulking on the cracks because this place is oozing with excitement and we will not be held liable if you get any on your clothes.  Well enough of the introductions let us get to it:

VOLLEYBALL

We have an exciting season of volleyball coming up in Fall 2008.  Each week, this newsletter will have a synopsis of both Varsity and Jr. Varsity games and exciting statistics for the Fighting Lady Lancers.  To begin the season, let’s introduce our teams.

Returning Seniors include Rayna Bowen, Christina Mao, Alyssa Stevenson, and Katie Surface.  Joining Varsity this year are Juniors Jessica Arguelles, Chelsea Cramer, and Kelsey Doolittle.  Returning Sophomore Taylor Pierini and new to the school Freshman Lyndsey Carruthers, round out the Varsity team.  Our Varsity took 3rd place in their Varsity summer league against some strong public school competition so we look forward to an exciting year.

The Jr. Varsity makes a strong showing this year with returning players including Juniors, Vicki Rorex and Stephanie Yeung, and returning Sophomores Alexa Cordero and Jasmine Lara. New additions to the team are Freshmen Emily Beaton, Leah Dorsey, Aneesa Ettress, Vanessa Macias, Christina Oka, Amanda Perez, and Hannah Rhinehart.  The Jr. Varsity Ladies took 2nd place in their Jr. Varsity summer league against equally tough competition.  We expect a terrific season for the JV.

So, come and see our ladies play some awesome volleyball.  Our schedule will be on the WCHS website soon.  Our first home game (played at the Royal Oak gymnasium adjacent our school) is Thursday, Sept. 11 when the Jr. Varsity vs. Rio Hondo.  The first Varsity home game is the following week on Wednesday, Sept. 17 against LA Lutheran.  Our league games begin in October with the first home game on Tuesday, October 7th vs. Pomona Catholic.  Come out, cheer for our teams, and show your Lancer spirit!

Varsity: Western Christian beats Gladstone, 45-27

GLENDORA – First-year Western Christian High School football coach Rob Castaneda earned his first win Friday night when the Lancers defeated Gladstone 45-27 in a nonleague season opener.

“This is a huge way to open the season for us,” Castaneda said. “For a school that only has 450 kids in the school, this is a great win for our team and our small community.”

Western Christian wasted no time, scoring on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Junior Alex Beaton to Senior Reed Covington. It was a lead the Lancers never relinquished.

“He is only a junior and has the ability to make some big plays,” Castaneda said. “This season he will show that he is one of the top quarterbacks in the Valley.”

Beaton finished 7 of 14 for 79 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 50 yards and a TD on three carries.
Western Christian’s Senior George Perez had an impressive performance. The senior scored on an 82-yard kickoff return and caught a 9-yard pass from Beaton, giving the Lancers a 45-27 lead. Perez also took several snaps at quarterback, turning in some big plays.

“We are in a great situation having two quarterbacks that can both play on a high level,” Castaneda said. “There’s no way that we can only play one at the quarterback position.”

Western Christian also got several key plays from its special teams. Senior Robert Wiley had a 54-yard punt return and Junior Zach Watkins kicked a 32-yard field goal.

“We have been practicing special teams all summer,” Castaneda said. “I’m just so proud of the way these boys played on the field tonight.”

Gladstone staged one final comeback attempt when, after an on-side kick, Herrera caught a 4-yard pass from Paul Flores to cut the led to 38-27 with 4:20 remaining. But the Lancers’ Covington intercepted Flores for the second time to end any hopes of a Gladiators comeback.
