The year is winding down and I have some good reports from the various sports so here it goes:
BASEBALL
Lancers Win 2nd League Title in 3 Years and JV gets in the Action as Well
Varsity: the Lancers won six league games straight (7 of their last 8 ) to clinch their second league championship in the last three years. On Tuesday (May 6th) the men trailed Arrowhead Christian 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth before Junior Aaron Reynoso tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field. With two outs now and runner at first and second Junior Anthony Llorens drove a ball over the center fielder’s head for the go ahead runs. The WC then proceeded to score 5 more runs with two outs to clinch no worse than a share of the title, but a loss on Thursday would force a three way tie and coin flip for how the playoff seeding would go. The Lancers decided they had worked too hard to leave their fate up to a coin flip as they swept the Eagles with a 9-3 win giving them the number one seed and league title all by themselves. The WC is 15-10 on the season and finished league play at 8-3.
Junior Varsity: the JV Lancers decided they want in the action as the won their five league games in a row giving them a share of the JV title. Sophomore David Curtis threw a complete game on Tuesday (May 6th) for the win against Arrowhead Christian and Freshman Darrel Rice picked up the win on Thursday (May 8th). Freshman Sang Ha Lee was notable on offense.
TRACK AND FIELD
Blume Wins League Title in Shot Put and Meister Finishes Second in 1600 Meter
Senior Nick Blume took first at the League Finals meet in the shot put with a throw of 41’11.5”. His efforts earned him a trip to the C.I.F. Preliminaries on Saturday (May 10th) where he placed 15th out of about 45 throwers from across Southern California. This is a huge accomplishment and a good end to his senior year.
Sophomore Caleb Meister was league Runner-Up at the League Finals in the 1600 meter run with a run of 5:07. He has consistently placed in the top three in all of the meets and his efforts here earned him a spot at the C.I.F. Preliminaries where he finished 9th in his heat. We look forward to big things from this young man in the two years he has left.
Senior Morgan Barajas finished 4th in the Shot Put and 3rd in the Discus at the League Finals.
GOLF
Senior Donnie McWhirter ended his stellar Western Christian Athletic career with his placement on the First Team All-League Golf Team with another solid performance at the League Finals shooting an 86 (18 holes) on day one and then a 94 on day two. Donnie will leave The WC a highly decorated athlete.
Freshman Michael Broad performance in the finals earned him a spot on the Second Team All-League. He shot a 96 on day one and then followed with a consistent 95 on day two.
HONORABLE MENTION ALL LEAGUE: SU-IN PARK (97+101=198) and KANDACE DELGADO (93+109=202)
SOFTBALL
Varsity: The Ladies finished their last four league games with 1 win and 3 losses. They lost two of those games by 1 run and the other by 2 runs as seemed to be the theme for their season. They finished the year 4-21 and 1-9 in league with 10 of the losses by 2 runs or less. This young team competed and I hope the ladies decide to stay together because this team is on the verge of a great season with many returning starters. Junior Nikki Povero, Junior Rayna Bowen and Sophomore Emily Cobb both had big years for the Lancers. This is very young team that will be solid in years to come.
Junior Varsity: The JV Ladies finished their season at 9-9 overall and ended up second in league play, one game out of first at 6-2. The Lancers handed league Champ Arrowhead Christian their only loss in league. Freshman standout Jasmine Lara recorded 17 strike outs and also posted 2 doubles and 6 RBIs in the last two games of the season.
THIS WEEK
Varsity Baseball first round of C.I.F. Playoffs; at home at Citrus College at 3:30P on Thursday (May 15th) against Paraclete.
