SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
All students are required to complete two years of a lab science.

Pre-Chemistry (not currently offered) (CSU/UC)
This course is a minimal math-based approach to chemistry that qualifies as a CSU/UC non-lab science elective if taken in the year preceding Chemistry. The course introduces students to the nature of science; the physical science method; solids, liquids and gases; the clarification of matter; atomic structure and the periodic table; chemical bonds; the elements; chemical reactions; acids, bases and salts; radioactivity and nuclear reactions; basic organic chemistry.
Prerequisites : A grade of “C” or better in Algebra 1 or Algebra 1A/1B.

Biology (Lab) (CSU/UC)
Biology emphasizes science as inquiry within the Christian worldview. Problem solving is given considerable emphasis along with the memorization of catalogued facts and names. Concepts include ecological relationships, individuals and populations; communities and ecosystems; plant, animal and protist diversity; and patterns of life on land and in the microscopic world. Lab fee required.
Prerequisites :Freshman must be enrolled simultaneously in Geometry. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors: require a “C” or better in any previous science courses.

Biology AP (Lab) (CSU/UC)
The Biology AP course is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory course. All students enrolled are encouraged to take the AP examination, given in May. College credit may be granted for competency on this examination. Textbooks will be purchased by students. Lab fee required.
Prerequisites : Biology AP requires a grade of “B” or better in chemistry and biology or instructor approval.

Anatomy/Physiology (Lab) (CSU/UC)
This advanced college preparatory course studies the human body, including its anatomy and physiology. The course is taught from a molecular viewpoint with a biochemical emphasis. Pathology is included so that students become aware of possible malfunctions within their own bodies. Lab fee required.
Prerequisites: “B” or better in Biology and “C” or better in Chemistry. Math Levels: “C” or better in both Algebra 1 (including 1A/1B) and Geometry.

Chemistry (Lab) (CSU/UC)
Chemistry requires good math skills in applied algebra and geometry. The student will gain understanding in the areas of atomic theory, chemical reactions, liquids, periodic table, energy effects, the mole concept, reaction rates, equilibrium, solubility, acids and bases, oxidation reduction, electrons, chemical bonding, organic chemistry, molecular structure, and kinetic energy. Lab fee required
Prerequisites: “C” or better in previous science courses and Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 or “B” or better in previous science, Algebra 1 and Geometry and be taking Algebra 2 concurrently with Chemistry.

Chemistry Honors (Lab) (CSU/UC)
Honors chemistry will cover the same topics listed above for chemistry with a deeper level of study in each of the areas. Lab Fee Required
Prerequisites: A combined G.P.A. of 3.5 in Biology, Algebra 1, Geometry. Must have taken or take Algebra 2 or higher level math concurrently with class. Teacher recommendation is required.

Physics (Lab) (CSU/UC)
Physics includes the study of measurement, optics, waves, mechanics, heat, sound, electricity, magnetism, and atomic and nuclear structure. The emphasis is put on analytical problem solving using Algebra. Lab fee required.
Prerequisites :“B” in all previous science courses, or instructor approval. Math levels: “B” in all previous math courses. Students must have completed Algebra 2. Math Analysis or Calculus should be taken concurrently.
