Students are introduced to research skills and the study of various genre in literature. English Honors 10 will continue a foundation needed for communicating ideas through vocabulary, reading, writing and speaking. The class will cover selected works of British, American and world literature to enable student to analyze how literature reflects historical eras, and social and philosophical conditions. Students will complete a research paper and read six novels and plays. |

English 11 is an in-depth study including vocabulary development, writing skills and a systematic study of American literature from the early settlement to contemporary authors. The course will consist of grammar and composition, representative short pieces from each of the major periods of American literature, and composition writing and revising. A written research paper is required. Students will read five novels and three plays during the year. |

English 11 HONORS is designated to prepare capable and highly motivated students to demonstrate their potential. Students will refine reading, vocabulary, grammar and composition skills. After a review of short stories, poetry and drama, the course will begin a chronological study of American literature and end with a critical analysis research project. Students will read ten novels and six plays throughout the course. Summer reading is required. |

English 12 is a course in British literature and composition designed to provide a survey of literature from the 8th century through the 20th century. English 12 AP is a rigorous survey of British literature through the 20th century. The course provides an extensive study of British literature, poetry analysis, composition and a survey of literature from Gilgamesh through the 20 th century. Emphasis is placed on developing critical judgment through reading analytically and writing and composing critical papers. All students enrolled are encouraged to take the AP examination in literature and composition, given in May. College credit may be granted for competency on this examination. Summer reading is required. Textbooks will be purchased by students. |

Prerequisites : An 85% score or better on the English honors test, teacher recommendation, instructor approval, and successful completion of English 10 Honors and/or English 11 Honors. |

Journalism students will explore the history and background of mass media production, while learning to write news, opinion, feature and sports stories. Students will learn desktop publishing, page layout, photography basics and cropping skills. The journalism class will produce the school newspaper. |
